Two-Phase Treatment
WHY DR. NELSON DOES NOT NORMALLY PRACTICE TWO-PHASE TREATMENT
Over the past few years Dr. Nelson has been incorporating new technologies into his practice that allow a level of precision, speed and refinement. Because of these improvements in his techniques He has decreased the average treatment time from approximately 30 months to less than 18 months. The interval between appointments has also been increased from 4-6 weeks to 8-10 weeks. So there are a lot fewer appointments needed to finish an orthodontic treatment. Patients that Dr. Nelson has treated using these new techniques are thrilled since treatment is not intruding into their busy lives as much.
The biggest benefit is the ability to treat more complex malocclusions more quickly and efficiently in the permanent dentition. Adult patients appreciate having their treatment done in a year or less. For younger patients Dr. Nelson has almost eliminated the need for two- phase orthodontic treatment. This saves patients an average of $3,000 for the cost of the early phase of treatment as well as years of appointments going to the orthodontist. This has greatly decreased patients’ frustration and stress with missed school and work.
There are still times when it is necessary to do some early intervention. For example, when there are gum problems or severe cosmetic issues affecting the patient’s self esteem, but these are rare.
Short treatment time has decreased the incidence of decalcification and decay of the teeth. Patients are also very motivated to wear elastics as they see how fast their treatment is progressing and want to keep things moving. It is very exciting for the patients, Dr. Nelson and the staff of Trinity Orthodontics.
Dr. Nelson feels he is achieving the best final results that he has ever achieved. He belives in doing what is right for the patients, by practicing high quality orthodontic treatment in minimal time and eliminating phase-one treatment. It is very beneficial to his patients, especially during these tough economic times.
Conversely, it is not to his benefit to decrease the size of his practice in this way, but it is in the best interest of his patients and that is what he will always do. In the past, Dr. Nelson did practice early phase treatment, however, because of new technology and more precise techniques, he can now achieve the same excellent results without early treatment and the associated financial stress and scheduling burden.
Dr. Nelson's expertise and new technology combined has made it possible for adults to have very short treatment times as well. Many of them are done in a year or less with beautiful final results.
